Key Responsibilities
Pre-Institute (Winter and Spring)
- Establish and document Institute-wide health care procedures, including medication administration, injury/illness response, and emergency protocols
- Work with GIV HQ to develop policies for communicable disease prevention, hydration, sun safety, and mental health support
- Ensure that all health procedures comply with local regulations and best practices
After Enrollment/Before Institutes - Review student health information and relevant health history, make notations, and
follow up with internal parties (such as Institute Directors, Nurses, and Mental Health Counselors) - Review all student and staff health forms for completeness and necessary authorizations prior to Institute
- Identify potential medical concerns, allergies, or special health needs in advance.
- Flag missing or unclear medical information and follow up with families or physicians
- Communicate proactively with parents/guardians about complex health needs, medications, or care plans
- Organize and maintain secure, confidential health records according to Institute policies and HIPAA standards
- Serve as the primary point of contact for families with medical-related questions or concerns before the Institute
- Make recommendations for supply needs or improvements to the health care setup
- Support health staff at each Institute in preparing for their in-person session
During Institutes - Through phone, video, and as needed visits:
- Support staff in understanding student-specific health needs (e.g., allergies, asthma, diabetes)
- Advise the team to ensure appropriate health forms for GIV’s enrollment process
- Advise the team regarding illness policies and procedures
- Be available on an ad-hoc basis for health advice during Institutes
- Speak with Institute staff and parents as needed during the Institute
- Assist with wrap-up of summer Institutes, including lessons learned and best practices for forms, procedures, and planning
